A véritable strangeland

Eventhough, tomorrow normally is the 1st of June, I declare that tomorrow shall be the 1st of December. Sejuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuk

I've wrote a few times that the French national sport is striking. Well, I'm sorry, I used the wrong term. The national sport is complaining, and they are champions in the striking event. Other events that exist in this sport, in which they are also champions, are finding bad things to say about the anglo-saxons (a term that the French use to describe English-speaking-liberalist countries), complaining about life, complaining about the weather, and complaining about the food served at the canteen (sub categories are: how the food tastes, how the food looks like, how the food are not healthy, and how Kimi always has too much sauce in his plate).

I'm used to their complainings. But if you're spending a day with the French for the first time, be prepared to hear non-stop complaining from dawn to dusk. Let's have a look at the daily timeline of complaining

8 am (moments before the first class)
-Saying hello to everyone
-Complains how one didn't get enough sleep the night before
-Complains about the stupid things that the government did the day before
- Class starts

12 noon (lunch break)
-Complains about what the teachers did during the class
-Complains about the work that the teachers gave
-Complains about the upcoming tests
-Complains about the canteen food (see above for more information on this)

2 pm (moments before class starts)
-Discussions on last night TV programmes
-Complains about the movie shown
-Complains about the football match played
-Support for some strike held somewhere
-Complains about how one has not finished one's homework because the teachers didn't give much time (eventhough it was given a month ago)

6pm (class ends, on the way to the métro)
-Complains about how tired one is
-Complains about the homeworks that needed to be done
-Complains about the subjects that needed to be revised for upcoming tests
-Mengumpat on other students who are not present in the métro
-Bid everyone goodbye when getting off the métro

Yes, the French are the world champion when it comes to expressing one self

Ujian hidup

Suddenly the world seems such a perfect place
Suddenly it moves with such a perfect grace

Woohoo. The worst day of the academic year has passed. Today I had three of the heaviest subjects; Law, Economics and Doc et Analyse. Law was, well, law. Like always. I've never liked law anyways, so what the heck. Economics was great. There was three short essay questions, and luckily they are not questions about economics school of thoughts. And furthermore two of the questions were based on things that I've already seen for SPM. But eventhough I answered all correct, my prof will never give full marks. He believes that marks should be well redistributed among students. Like in the previous exam, everyone got marks between 10 and 12, and honestly I think some didn't even deserve 10, while most of us deserve at least 15. But then again, after learning Group Psychology, I might just over-estimating my group. And as for Doc et Analyse, well, I managed to answer the calculation questions, but as for the questions on lectures, ermm...

Today I got back my maths paper. 18,5/20. In Probability! One of the topics that I hate so much (along with logarithm and primitif). And that's my best score in maths so far, even better than my marks in Colmar. And my classmates were all went like "Putain". The thing is, in the previous accountings test, I got a mark lower than usual, and lower than mostof my classmates, but still a good mark. And everyone was like 'Ha! I've beaten Kimi!'. And it was the day of our maths exam and I told them 'we'll see about that this afternoon'. And today I got 18,5.The next best mark was 12. Ha! Baru tau. (Riaknyalah aku ni. Tak baik betul)

Speaking about exams, right now is the exam season in France since the academic year is ending in end June. So the Baccalauréat is just in the corner. The BAC is the French equivalent to STPM (the SPM level does not exist in France, with the BAC you can continue your studies anywhere you want). So everyday, in the news, they've been talking about it. But the difference between the BAC and SPM is that, in Malaysia, we're more keen to talk about students who manage to get as many As as they can (Amalina got 17 As), but in France they're talking about the youngest BAC candidate. This year it's a 14 year old.

Personally I think, it is much more interesting and more important, and even more useful for us to talk about the youngest candidate rather than the candidate with the most As. I mean, what's the use of talking about someone who has As in all 75 subjects available? It's not like he or she will use all of them. Plus, the Malaysian education system does not require people with brains to get good results, as long as you can memorise things and don't suffer from alzheimer, it's sufficient. Wouldn't you be much more in awe if a 12 year score a straight As in 9 subjects in SPM than a17 year scoring As in 17 subjects? I mean yeah, you scored 17 As, but the other guy scored 9, and he's only 12! Which brings me to the subject of a yound boy called Adi Putra.

Adi Putra is 6 years old, and perhaps he's 7 by now. When I was 7, in standard 1, I remembered that in maths, we did additions and substractions up tu 100, with pictogrammes. But this kid, at 6, he has mastered the art of logarithm and primitif (what a coincidence, the things that I hate the mostin Maths). I mean come on, I'm 19 this year, and I still have doubts whenever I do those type of questions. Unfortunate enough for Adi Putra, he was born in Malaysia, where people like him, who're too smart for their age, have no chance to develop his unique ability. The only thing, the only hope that could advance him in the education system, the PTS where one can skip standard 4, does not exist anymore (well, I, as the guinea pig of such exam, know the pros and cons of that PTS thingy). I thinkI would feel prouder to be a Malaysian if he could score A1 in Add Maths and Mod Maths, and I might even shed a tear, rather than when somebody scored A1 in all 75 subjects. And unfortunate enough for Adi Putra as well, that his strength is in Maths. If his strength was his singing voice, I'm sure by now, everyone is prepared to sacrifice a large sum of their money, by purchasing credit hours on their cellphone, to send him thousands of messages each week; "AFUNDI ADI". Sad.

Sejuk, Froid, Cold, Kalt!!!!!

Damn, it's cold down here. It has been raining for days, and I, who is living on the groundfloor, am suffering from the extreme weather. The radiator that I have in my room is centrally controlled. Meaning that even if i turn the knob to the end, there will still be no heat since the Résidence decided that since it's officially spring, there is no need for the gas to pass through the radiators anymore. So one more good reason to get away from this sad shack.

The three weeks of misery is nearly over. Out of the 17 papers that I need to sit for, I 've sat for 10, including the German paper this morning, so 7 more to go. Though I've sat for more than half of the papers, the peak is yet to come. This coming Monday, I have three major papers; Law, Economics and Analysing Financial Documents. Plus right now, I have 3 projects that are due for these 2 coming weeks; Communication, Computer and Personal Professional Project. I can't wait for the holidays!

And tomorrow I have Psychology. So I need to go andget some sleep.
Have a nice day ahead and toodle-loo*

(People say the Brits got this phrase from the French' à toute à l'heure meaning later. I say, they're actually saying to the loo as in i'm off to the loo)

Aduhh. Buk! Kecewa gila masa tu. Korang taklehnak bayangkan betapa frustnya aku. Sabtu sebelum tu aku dah pergi tengok kawasan tu. Memang best, sunyi and semua dekat (Pos, bank, supermarket, metro, stesen bas, kedai kebab). Aku punyalah kecewa, sampaikan aku tak larat nak pergi kuliah Ekonomi. Aku balik, amik air sembahyang, lepas tu check kat internet lagi untuk rumah lain. 10 call aku buat, 5 tak jawab, 4 kata dia tak accept aku pasal samada aku foreigner/takde parents dekat france/ takde penjamin orang Perancis/ rumah tu dah disewa.

Esoknya, Selasa, aku start pindahkan barang aku kat rumah Syazwan. Bilik aku sekarang ni kena kosongkan by 20 August, and since aku takde time tu, kenalah kosongkan awal-awal. And since aku kena pindah bilik lain anyway, aku rasa baik aku pindah rumah lain je. Antara sebab-sebabnya ialah:
1 Bising
2 Kalau aku pindah maknanya aku kena share toilet and shower dengan lebih ramai orang lagi
3 Sejak Januari dah 5 kali letrik tetiba takde
4 Orang yang bersihkan toilet tu tuduh aku selalu tak tutup lampu padahal orang yang bukak lampu tu orang yang dari memana ntah, nak pakai tandas tu, pasal emergency (bilik aku kat groundfloor)
5 Bilik ni sempit
6 Bilik ni memanjang, so susah nak ikut kiblat. Aku solat ikut kiblat maksimum (sepatutnya senget lagi tapi tak leh pasal ada almari)
7 Sewa tak padan dengan bilik and comfort
Begitulah hendaknya. So aku pindahkan baju-baju sejuk aku dengan buku-buku cerita aku dulu kat rumah Syazwan. Petang tu aku pergi tengok rumah.

Rumah tu dekat Lambersart. Ahahaha. Besarnya 30m² compared tu 9m² aku sekarang nih. Tapi aku rasa orang akan kata, laaa keciknya, pasal bilik air and dapur besar dari studio biasa. Pastu ada balcony kecik. Sewa rumah 360€. Nama jalan Rue de l'Eglise (Jalan Gereja). Gereja memang depan mata pun, jalan 30 saat dah sampai. Akupun cakap kat tuan rumah yang aku nak amik. Antara sebabnya ialah
1 Macam aku kata tadi, alang² kena pindah, baik pindah bebetul
2 Aku nak balik tengah bulan Jun ni, so nak kena siapkan paper² rumah secepat mungkin
3 Aku takleh nak memilih sangat pasal belum tentu lepas ni boleh buat appointment lain since, tuan² rumah kat sini banyak sangat kerenah sepertimana 4 daripada 10 orang yang aku call tu. Setelah tuan rumah kata dia setuju, aku sangat gumbira.

Seperti biasa, pekse sejam setengah, aku keluar lepas 15 minit je (Riak betul).

Khamis aku ada pekse Communication. Susah gak aa. Soalan first kena bandingkan sifat-sifat 2 tokoh perniagaan, second kena comment pasal TV dan kebolehpercayaan orang terhadap TV, and third kena buat Press Release. Aku tak berapa yakin pekse Communication kali ni. Petang pulak ada akaun. Tetiba cikgu akaun ni buat hal pulak. Kasik soalan bertulis pulak. 5 markah pulak tu. Aihh. Lepas Akaun, aku pergi jumpa tuan rumah aku lagi sekali, hantar cek deposit. So maknanya sekarang secara separa rasminya aku confirm pindah rumah tu. Malam tu pulak aku pergi tengok Da Vinci Code dengan Syazwan. Filem ni best kalau korang dah baca buku tu, and korang suka buku tu. Kalau tak korang susah nak suka. Cuma aku kecewa jugak aa dia banyak tertinggal fakta pasal Da Vinci. AKu sebenarnya selama ni tak faham ending buku tu, lepas tengok filem tu baru aku paham. Ahahaha.

Jumaat pulak aku ada pekse Sociology. But in between pekse dengan kelas sebelum tu ada 3 jam kosong, so aku pun studylah sestudy-studynya. Alhamdulillah, teknik aku berkesan jugak. Macam aku cakap dulu, aku kalau pekse aku selalu buat nota kecik. Aku amik A4, lipat tiga secara memanjang, and aku buat nota ringkas. Benda ni berkesan sebab, first korang kena baca teks biasa, kat situ korang dah start faham, lepas tu korang tulis balik atas nota ringkas, kat situ korang hafal sesikit, lepas tu korang dah tak payah dah tengok teks tebal-tebal tu. Tengok nota ringkas dah cukup. And kalau korang ada temporary photographic memory cam aku ni (muahaha), boleh jek ingat and imagine ayat mana dekat belah mana nota. Cuma masa study tu aku gaduh dengan kawan aku. Dia cukup anti cara aku belajar. Aku biasanya buat nota isi-isi penting, lepas tu hafal, pastu baru fahamkan. Dia selalu marah aku. Dia kata kita belajar kena faham dulu, baru boleh ingat. So aku nak tengok dengan result Sosiology ni siapa yang betul.

Sabtu, seperti biasa, pindahkan barang lagi dekat rumah Syazwan. Petang pergi Ikea beli kotak, sambil² tu belek² Ikea sambil berangan nak hias rumah baru. Ahahaha. Jumpa satu meja study berkaca yang sangat lawa. Taktaulah nak beli ke tak. Tengok budgetlah nanti.

French politics

Currently in France, there is a huge scandal called the Clearstream Affair. No one actually really understands what the hell is going on, since it involves a lot of high ranking politicians and businessmen. But a satarical TV programme has managed to explain it quite clearly.

Translation
... about this Clearstream Affair. To understand the affair, you have to look at the government's hierarchical diagram
Him, Villepin, when he was at his place, at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, have learnt about a hidden bank account of him
He asked her if she knows about it, she said no
When he was placed at his place, who at the same time, went there, he demanded an investigation on him, who came back here at the Domestic Affairs Ministry to control an investigation on him and on her
She, who might be at his place one day, have not said a thing to him, and he attacked him and her to stop them from kicking him out
All of this is because him, him and her, wants to be at his place, who wants to stay
That's it
Oh yeah, then there's also him, who wants to be at his place, but no one takes him seriously

And a movie is coming out end of May, on Jacques Chirac's political life. I really can't wait

Of all the rights of women, the greatest is to be a mother. ~ Lin Yutang

Segala kepahitan
Pengalaman menjadi penawar
Mengejar impi ke pintu Syurga

Duhai bonda
Bilakah akan ku kecapi kasturi
Penebus maruah
Dan semangat lama

Mengapa sinar neon dan gedung indah
Kotaraya yang menjanjikan sejuta rasa
Sejuta haruman
Kini menjadi penjara jiwa
Ku yang merindukan ketenangan

Duhai bonda
Hari-hariku kini berlalu
Bagaikan bahtera
Tanpa layar dan kemudi

Bonda
Akhirnya terbongkar jua rahsia
Tangisan dan gurindam
Keramat kasih sayangmu

Bonda
Saat dan pertemuan semula
Kita kali ini
Akan ku abadikan
Keramat kasih sayangmu

I never promised you a rose garden

Eventhough class starts at 1030 today, I woke up at 8 as I have a rendez-vous at 9. I went to open up another bank account today. The only reason why I opened a new account is to get a check (or is it cheque?) book. So, from now on I have two bank accounts. Which means a new bank card. Wahahaha. My wallet is actually an inch thick in average. It can only slim down when a new month starts, which is when I take out all of my receipts from my wallet. When I was small, I always wonder why do adults have usually thick wallets. And now, as an adult, I understand why. Because we adults, we like to collect cards. At any time given, I always have my photocopy card, cinema card, Quick card, student card, bank card(s), cafetaria card, Auchan card, KLM card, identity card, 12-25 card and my Viva card. So even if one day we managed to create a cashless society, we can never be a cardless society.

And finally we had our German class today after 2 months (5 weeks of blockage, 2 weeks Easter break, and two Fridays lost to make way to presentations made by a Lithuanian and a Belgian). Anyway, I have forgotten almost everything that we've learned before. And today we began 2 new grammatical points; the directif and the locatif. Really, I myself couldn't figure out how can the Germans speak a language that is highly complicated. Having two genders in French is hard enough (for your information English and Malay have only one gender with some exceptions), in German you have three genders. And then to construct a sentence, in French you have the COD and the COI, but in German you have the locatif, directif, datif, acusatif, and nominatif. And those are the ones that I've learnt. I'm pretty sure that there are at least 372 (a randomly picked number) more of those things.

But I really enjoyed the German class today. Firstly because the prof said I have a very good pronounciation (unlike the French, I do not pronounce things the french way), and secondly, the prof actually sang today in class. He was announcing the exam date (which is on the 26th by the way), when my class representative let out a huge sigh. And then he said "I know it's tough, but I never promised you a rose garden". Ewahh. Jiwang jugak cikgu ni. When we asked who said that (because I thought it was Shakespeare, and someone else said it was someone else), he said it was a song, and he sang a small excerpt. I know that song, sang by Lynn Anderson in the 60's.

Today we had our exam on Survey. There was only 4 questions, but I answered on 5 pages. I'm just hoping that it was not a waste of ink and paper. I tried my best to remember everything since last week. As usual, I made a recapitulative note on a piece of couloured A4 paper, fold into 3. And when my friends saw me reading it, everyone asked me if I can lend it to them to make photocopies. Oh I am so proud. The only problem is, if everyone fails, it would be because of that piece of paper.

My new favourite cartoon character. Le Chat.

I beg your pardon,
I never promised you a rose garden.
Along with the sunshine,
There's gotta be a little rain sometimes.

it's yesterday oncemore

While I was surfing on youtube.com looking for clips from Whose Line Is It Anyway, I found one clip from a cartoon series that I used to watch when I was little. After seeing that clip, I began to look for other series that I used to watch when I was small. Those were the days...

M.A.S.K. (not to be confused with the green-faced creature from a film played by Jim Carrey)

Thundercats

Transformers (My dad used to sing "Transformers jeng! Teneng teneng teneng teneng Decepticon)

Ghostbusters

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Ultraman Ace

The Adventures of Teddy Ruxpin

Duck Tales

Those are the cartoons that I used to watch before I entered Kindergarten. So I share the same nostalgic watching these series with my two older brothers. The following series was aired when I was in Kindergarten and when I just started Primary School.

Flashman

Doraemon

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

I have never seen the following series, but my brothers were fans of the series AND the song.

Gaban

Those were the days. It's a pity how current generation does not appreciate these series. I bet my little brother has never heard of these shows. Although some of them MIGHT seem stupid, I think they are much better than the cartoons nowadays like Spongebob Squarepants (which I find extremely annoying by the way), or Cow and Chicken. But hey! Those were the days.

Carpe Diem!

Terjadi satu hari sepasang suami isteri niberselisih faham... dan tak bertegur sapa..

-Melaka Hari Ini- 30 April 2006

Dua perkara yang mengejutkan.

Satu, aku tak pernah tahu pun kewujudan surat khabar Melaka Hari Ini.

Pertama, hilanglah nilai sentimental nama MRSM Jasin. Walaupun MRSM Jasin baru je 20 tahun, tak macam MCKK atau VI atau KGV, but still, nama MRSM Jasin tetap ada nilai sentimental especially untuk bekas-bekas pelajar, walaupun hanya 2 tahun bersekolah kat situ. Kenapa tak namakan MRSM Alor Gajah yang baru sempena Allahyaham instead of Jasin? Kedua, dalam senarai nama semua MRSM, takde satu pun yangtak pakai nama bandar/pekan koboi. Kalau betullah pertukaran nama ni bertujuan bagi memperingati jasa Allahyarham sebagai pejuang negara, kenapa kita tak bagi nama MRSM Maharajalela kat Pasir Salak? Atau MRSM Mahsuri kat Langkawi? And adakah ini bermaksud atu hari nanti MRSM Pekan akan dinamakan MRSM Najib Tun Razak? Atau MRSM Kepala Batas akan jadi MRSM Abdullah Badawi? Memang betul, Allahyarham banyak berjasa kepada negara, tapi banyak lagi cara kita boleh memperingati jasa beliau. Bukanke dah ada Muzium Ghaffar Baba dekat Peringgit, Melaka? And kalaulah perlu sangat tukar nama, kenapa tidak SMK Jasin? Sekolah harian yang mana tak ramai students yang 'attached' to the school's name. Us, MRSM students or ex-students, we're proud of our schools, tak kiralah MRSM mana, and to change something that we're proud of or something that we're attached to, especially when it is not really a necessity, can be very hard to be accepted.

I have been listening to this song for quite a while, without ever looking seriously at the lyrics. And I just found out today a small part of the lyrics, that I find really funny especially when you look at the context of the whole song, and at the movie from which this song is the soundtrack. It's from Brice de Nice (you can pronounce it the English or the French way, both are accepted widely here).

Amis, ouvrez vos coeurs !
Friends open up your hearts
No don't be afraid
Money does not make you happy
Money makes you evil
I'm different
I was born in luxury, it's my thing
Not yours, apparently.

Enfin bref.

Esok birthday Syazwan. Happy Birthday

Rombongan Cik Kiah ke Kilang Pyrex

Yesterday, we had a class trip (lawatan sambil belajar) to a factory in Saint-Omer, an hour bus trip from Lille. It was a glass factory named ArcInternational. For those who know brands such as Mikasa, Salviati, Luminarc and Studio Nova, well, they all come from this factory. I thought Arcopal came from here as well, but I was wrong. Pyrex is one of their products as well, but it is produced in another factory.

The tour begins at 1430 and we arrived, unfrenchly, an hour earlier, so the professors allowed us to visit the factory's store. There's nothing speacial actually, since almost everything is kitchenware, but mind you, they are at factory prices. Plus, since we're visitors, we were given 20% discount. When I learned about all the discounts that we're getting, I imagined two makciks gawking at the wide selection of kitchenware, at discounted prices, discussing whichPyrex to buy (or commonly known as Pinggan Perek).

The tour began with a video presentation of how the glasses are being made. It's amazing to know that eventhough more and more things are made outof plastics, we can never avoid using things made out of glass. We then began the tour of the factory. The factory was hot and noisy. So to prevent any legal actions concerning loss of hearing, the factory provides us with earplugs, the one that they sell at the blood-choking (cekik darah) price of RM10 at the F1 Grand Prix in Sepang. They are bruight orange and very squidgy and they look like a witch's pointed hat, you can even trick people into thinking that it's a bubble gum. The tour was interesting, but only after 10 minutes, you'll get bored, and feel drowsy because of the heat and the fume. So we just sat by the window, where there was a ventilation shade. We talked and talked, and we got bored. So we played a game with our earplugs. We have to come out with as many idea as we can using our earplugs. If you watch 'Whose Line Is It Anyway', it resembles much like the 'Props' game. It started innocently. Some use it as noseplugs, devil's horns and a popping zit. But the French are the least 'innocent' people on earth. And they came out with so many stupid ideas. Luckily, someone came out with something else to do. So the game ended. Luckily.

On the way back, I called Dinie to ask him when he's going back to Malaysia. It was a huge mistake. My classmates can never let me make a phone call in BM without making noises, mocking the way I speak BM. When Dinie asked me what was all that noise he's hearing, I told him that there are a bunch of crazy monkies who have never taken a shower since last month. They, of course, tried to mock me. And when I ended my call, they asked me what was I saying when I was on the phone, and pointing towards them. I just said, 'Oh nothing, I was just talking about the countryside'.

Sans un geste et sans un soupir ;

Pourtant lutter et te défendre ;

Si tu peux supporter d'entendre tes paroles
Sans mentir toi-même d'un mot ;

Sans qu'aucun d'eux soit tout pour toi ;

Si tu sais méditer, observer et connaître,
Sans jamais devenir sceptique ou destructeur ;
Penser sans n'être qu'un penseur ;

Sans être moral ni pédant ;

Seront tous jamais tes esclaves soumis,
