Holidays in 5 countries

I've been away from Lille for a week and I've been to 5 countries within that period of time. Pretty impressive eh? I've spent my holidays in Italy, France, Switzerland, and Germany. Oh and what's the 5th country? Vatican City of course!

On the same day I came back from Italy, we had a dinner at Nicole's place in Mulhouse. We were not the only guests, there were also Vincent's brother and a married couple, Pierre and Véronique, both of which are Nicole's and Vincent's friends. Nicole gave each of us a present; the little miss and mister book. They were individually wrapped, so we had to choose a book randomly. And what a surprise, I got the Mr Maigre (Thin) book. Nicole was kind enough to offer me to pick another book, but since it's was randomly picked, I think I'm gonna stick to it.

The next day, on christmas day itself, we had lunch at Patricia's house. We arrived at around 1200 and left at around 1800. 6 hours of non stop eating. She served us turkey (which she bought from the same Halal shop as we usually go) and potatoes. Her son Arnaud was also there, and Pat's mom joined us for dessert. That night we watched Saw 1 together, something that we haven't done together for quite a long time.

The 26th is a public holiday in Lorraine and Alsace, as they were both under the german influence once, and they stick to that tradition. So most of the shops are closed just like in Germany and Switzerland. But we decided to go to Zürich eventhough the shops were not open. Unlike Genève, Zürich has nothing interesting. We just walked along the river to the lake, and then back to the train station on the other side of the river. Instead of going back at 1900 as we planned, we came back with the 1600 train.

We had lunch together with all the professors on the 27th in Breisach, a town off the french-german border. We ate at a turkish restaurant. We then climbed the hill to get to the church on top of the hill. It was snowing heavily, so the view wasn't clear at all. Then we went to Giovanna's house for tea (although we're stuffed with turkish food). The profs dropped us off in front of the Colmar train station, and we said our goodbyes again. I promised them I would be back at least once when the TGV is completed in 2007. Then we ate together at Helmi's Kebab. Another activity that we haven't done in a long time.

The next day we went to Freiburg in Germany. I shopped for some clothes since it's much cheaper than in France. I bought some t shirt and some jumper. The usual kebab shop where we always go when we're in Freiburg has closed down. So we had to find an alternative shop. It wasn't as good as the old one.

I got back my DELF result. It was OK i guess. Though I was hoping for something different.

It has been a great holiday. A memorable one. Makes me don't want to leave Colmar. But hey, life must go on. And so here I am, back in Lille.

Prossima Fermata: Pisa Centrale

Our train was scheduled to depart at 0655, but suddenly the train broke down, and there was no electricity in the train. It was delayed for about 20 minutes. We had to change trains in Firenze (Florence), and when we got there, as soon as we found out at which platform is our train, we saw the the train trailing slowly leaving the station. Luckily there's another train 30 minutes later. But it will take 30 minutes more to get to Pisa compared to the train that we missed. Meaning we will be wasting 1 hour of our time in Pisa.

When we got to Pisa, we only had 2H30 before our train back. We decided to walk to the tower site instead of taking a bus. When we got there we learned that we can actually go up the tower. So we went to buy the tickets (12€). Although it's expensive, we bought it anyway, since we have travelled this far. When you climb the tower, you can actually feel that it's leaning. The stairs are narrow and dark. It felt like ages to get to the top. There was nothing great about the view from the top. You can only see Pisa, which is nothing to brag about.

When we got down, we have 1H15 left. We spent the next hour taking pictures from different angles in different positions with different poses. Out of the 65 pictures i took, less than 10 look actually authentic, as if i'm trying to hold the tower from falling, hugging the tower, gripping the tower or trying to set the tower up straight again. Then we did some souvenirs shopping. We had 15 minutes left, so we rushed to the bus stop. When we got to the train station, we only had 3 minutes left so we ran. Luckily we managed to get on to the train. The train was full. There were people standing in the aisles and even in between 2 coaches. It seemed a lot like the trains in India. We had to stand for 1h30 before we actually got a sit in the aisle (not real seats anyways, foldable seats).

When we got back to Rome, there was still light. So we went quickly to the Foro Romano near Piazza di Venezia. Then we went to Santa Maria della Concezioni church. A few centuries ago, the Cappuccini (and not Cappuccino, it has nothing to do with them) decided to do something with the bones of their fellow monks that had worked at the church. They decided to built an altar using only bones. It's a breathtaking sight, and quite scary. After that, we went to the Fontana di Trevi again. Since this was our last night in Rome, we decided to eat authentic Italian food. We ate pasta and we shared a pizza. It was 41€ for 2 persons. But it was worth it. My Short Pasta with Salmon sauce was to die for.

My last and final night in Rome.
